First the knitting: If you look closely, you can see that I've begun to knit the right front of the Einstein Coat. I'm enjoying all this garter stitch. VERY relaxing!

I've been on an English mystery journey for the last four months. I fell in love with the BBC Shetland mystery series Shetland a year ago. The series is based on books by British writer Ann Cleeves. So I read her other series, the Vera Stanhope novels. Then I read all the Shetland books, and I just finished the last one:
So, I can tell you that the books are better than the TV shows. All the books are worth reading, though I am partial to the Shetland series.
That said, the Shetland series is worth watching. Each book is an entire season, so you get an in-depth story. I personally do not like the Vera TV series. Each book gets 3 episodes, so the stories are stripped down. Also, there are a million seasons and only 6 books, so it's an entirely different animal.

ReplyDeleteI loved Shetland too and almost bought some of her books on Audible and never did. I need to go back and look at them because I have a couple of credits and could use a good mystery.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy both the books and the TV series for Shetland and Vera. I prefer Shetland, but Vera is very good, too. I appreciate that the books and the TV programs are quite different -- the TV programs don't exactly follow the books, which (to me) makes them worth watching. Did you know that Ann Cleeves has a new series? It's called the Two Rivers series, and there are 2 books out so far (no TV yet, but I'll bet it's coming).

books are always better than a visual story. I have her books on my kindle but have yet to read any of them yet! I love to read mysteries.
ReplyDeleteHaha! I am reading "White Nights" right now! I really like Vera on TV, but I could not understand the Shetland accent so gave it up. I love those mittens you are making!
