Covid and Knitting -- Not In That Order

 I have a finished object:

I have knit sweaters before, but this is the first one that actually fits! It is the Fullerton Cardigan, which was published in the now-defunct Knitscene magazine. It is an easy, well-written pattern that would be a great first sweater. The yarn, Croft West Yorkshire Spinners, is a beautiful, lofty worsted weight. It is pretty scratchy, but it was fine over the turtleneck. I'll soak it to try to soften it up.

There has been a lot of knitting -- all on another sweater, Design 10, which turned out to be a total disaster. It's in time out while I decide whether to try to fix or frog it.

Last weekend I mentioned that I took my mom to the hospital for a colonoscopy. I didn't add that the outpatient surgery center was crowded and there were no Covid safety measures. There were people with masks on their chins and large family groups hanging around.  I knew it wasn't safe, but how do you walk out on your 85-year-old mother?

On Tuesday evening, I realized I had a sore throat, which lasted for a few days. I was also very tired. So, I either had a cold or Covid. I couldn't get a test until Thursday and now, 36 hours later, I still don't have results. I do know that I got it at the hospital because I had been homebound for the two weeks preceding the colonoscopy with a kidney stone.

Here's the worst part: I'm supposed to visit Seth in Chicago on Tuesday. Obviously I don't want to expose him to Covid. I decided that I'm going to go whether I have Covid or not. I'll drive to the Air Bnb, which seems safe to me. By the end of my visit I can go to museums, under CDC guidance. I've been homebound for more than three weeks now, so any change of scene will be appreciated!

  1. What a gorgeous sweater - love the style and the color. Well done you! Your hospital story amazes me! Around here I'm not even sure you can go in with someone if you are not scheduled for a procedure. Maybe now you can, but last summer when I had my cataract surgery Fletch had to drop me off and was not allowed in even to wait for me. I'm sorry there are so many people who just don't pay attention and mask properly, etc. I hope your visit to Chicago is wonderful - enjoy and stay warm (and safe).

  2. Oh, good golly! What a story. Everyone I know has Covid right now and we have been isolating for a week now in hopes of seeing our latest grandchild born on the 3rd. Of course we are still waiting for our tests to be delivered.
The sweater looks great. I love a good cardi but I am terrible at making them.

  7. Oh I love that sweater - the color and the pattern are a perfect pairing. And, even better you have it for cold weather (since I always tend to finish things well out of season, this is an accomplishment in my book). I hope you just have a cold and that you will feel better soon.

  8. That's a lovely sweater! And I'm so sorry about your Covid/cold. I am appalled that there were such lax protocols at a MEDICAL FACILITY!!! I find that horrifying, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. (I have been to many doctor appointments and "procedures" with my dad during Covid times, and always feel very safe and protected at our hospital. I'm so sorry that was not the case for you!) Anyway. I'm hoping you're able to get out and about -- and mostly that you're feeling better.

  9. The sweater is a winner! Isn't that quite the accomplishment. The sickness, not so much. Go on that visit and have a wonderful time!

  10. It’s sad that many people don’t want to wear masks or are tired of wearing them, especially in a hospital. Your trip plans and precautions are sound. I hope you have a good time. ❤️ your sweater and the color!

  13. That looks like a great sweater. The last sweater I knit out of Ultra Alpaca has not worn well. From here on out, I am sticking to non superwash wool. This Covid business is getting old.

  14. Wow, that sweater fits beautifully! Lovely buttons too.

How infuriating that there were no precautions being taken at the surgery center. That really surprises me. Even our little hospital up here is pretty diligent about masking.

I hope you were able to take your trip, and that you're feeling better now.
