Sketching and Covid

Recently, my friend Tsela and I decided to draw in downtown Middleton, a suburb of Madison. We planned to get beverages at a coffeeshop, Helbach's, but it had closed early. Instead, we sat at one of their outdoor tables and drew:

Now we are glad we didn't spend any money there.  The owner actually posted a sign a few days later that said: "This is a Mask Free Zone. Please remove mask before entering."

Middleton is in Dane County. We are required to wear masks when we are inside a public place, including businesses. This is a county order. Someone took a photo of the sign and it went viral (pun intended).

When county health officials showed up at Helbach's to investigate, the owner called the police and complained about being harassed. Of course, the police backed up the health officials. I assume that they are requiring masks now, but I won't be going there to find out.

There is an excellent coffeeshop a block away, in case I'm out in Middleton again.

  1. LOVE your sketch (thanks for sharing - I have missed those). No masks??? Are they nuts??? No need to answer. Glad you didn't/couldn't go in.

  2. Love this sketch! Have you ever used water brush pens? I've just started playing around with them.

  3. So sorry to hear of such misplaced stubborn action! When one of his employees gets Covid and gives it to him, he will think differently....
That aside--I love your sketch--I've missed them so much!

  4. Another great sketch! I spent forever trying to sketch cars last year and gave up. You'd think they'd be easy but no..I have a sketch book full of wonky vehicles.
That's quite a story about the shop owner. Nothing as blatant here but people are getting lazy. Our MD numbers used to be pretty steady at 200 cases a day but now they have shot up to around 700 again. We added 4 yesterday just in our little town. All this three weeks after indoor dining, bars and gyms opened. I think it's pretty clear that opening schools will be a nightmare. Araignee

  5. That is so crazy that they actually put up a sign that said that? I can't understand why people are being so difficult over wearing masks, it is a pandemic! The masks keeps us and others safe. Good that people took photos and brought attention to it because its absurd. I love your sketch,it is so nice. Stay safe :)

  6. I seriously do not see the big issue with wearing a mask. Thankfully, YOUR county did something about it. I haven't seen much (or any) enforcement here. :-(

Love your sketch. You do such cute pictures.

  8. Another great sketch. Kudos to the person who shared the sign photo AND to the health department for following up. I’d spend my money elsewhere too.

  9. Lovely artwork.

Personally, I HATE wearing a mask - I have asthma and its beyond uncomfortable. But if a business requires them, I wear it. Our city is going mandatory in a few days... I will suck it up, and get my shopping done as fast as I can. I don't like it, but I understand the reasoning/science behind it. I don't understand why it's become such a divisive issue for some people.

  10. So fun to see your beautiful sketches; you are talented! Good decision on not going to that coffee shop; masks aren't too fun to wear, but they serve a purpose!

  11. I would never go there again, and I hope most people won't return. You can't demand that people do not wear masks, well that is unless you are the governor of Georgia. I can't stand it when people say that can't breath with one on, really what do you think happens when there is an 8 hour surgery and everyone in there is wearing one, get over it!
