Nonetheless, knitting goes on! I've become quite enamored of knitting mittens -- so much so that I decided I had to try my hand at designing some. It's not that there aren't gorgeous patterns out there, but I wanted to create a design that had all my favorite elements.
This is as far as I've gotten. If you look closely, you'll notice some errors. That's OK, this is an experiment. I'm using Briggs and Little Regal, which is perfect for mittens. It's rustic, but I like the way it feels on my hands.
I'm reading Outline, a novel by Rachel Cusk. It turned up on a good number of the best-books-of-2015 lists. I've just started it, but I can say already that the writing is gorgeous. The structure is somewhat experimental and I'm interested in seeing if it works. You learn about the narrator by reading a serious of conversations she has with others.
I'll be joining up with Ginny for Yarn Along.

The mitten is lovely!
ReplyDeleteAll of our special ed teachers did nothing but sit in their offices and do paperwork or have meeting after meeting with parents. What they had time to do with their students was minimal which was very frustrating for the teachers who had the special ed group in their class which was usually me. I got a quick consult from time to time but that was about it. I don't blame them. I blame the system for not being in touch with the students needs. Piling ten special needs kids in a class and then expecting the teacher to manage them and the other twenty regular needs kids is ridiculous. That system is broke. I could go on and on....sorry.
Your mitten looks fabulous! Love the blue and white combination.
ReplyDeleteFunny I read a few chapters of "Outline" after all the good reviews but gave up. I found the word choices a bit odd and forced and the whole thing felt contrived to me. Just bugged me I guess :)
I don't see any mistakes over here!! Sorry your career is so much paperwork. In my opinion, teachers are not paid enough or recognized for all that they do for children.
ReplyDeleteYou are a special Ed teacher in Real Life?!! You are a saint. Xoxo Andrea @ This Knitted Life

Your mitt is looking great so far! I designed a Christmas stocking for my husband that has snow-capped mountains & reindeer. It's not quite done but I'm loving how it's turning out.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking mitten, love the pattern and the colour combination! Hope knitting is a kind retreat from work stress.

ReplyDeleteI would love to set a date and a meet up. I could take the amtrak up perhaps? I would be happy to show you what I know of crochet. Perhaps in March??
ReplyDeleteYour mittens are going to be lovely!
ReplyDeleteI just subbed for several high school special-education teachers today as the school district sets aside a day for meetings and paperwork just so those teachers can keep up. I do not envy your job. I like the mittens you are knitting/designing. I am sure that knitting is your sanity keeper.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the knitting goes on - I can empathise with the paperwork and pressure. The mitten is fabulous well done for designing your own.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness that mitten is gorgeous. You amaze me with your knitting skills, what I knit is so simplistic.
ReplyDeleteHand in there with the paperwork.

Great mittens dear. Designing is fun, although I do often wonder why I bother...
