A Fail, A Finish, A Feline & Flowers

Have you ever dropped a Size 1 DPN on an airplane and found yourself crawling around on the floor to find it? Well, I have -- and more than once. Since I've got some travels planned for this summer, I determined to learn the Magic Loop method.
I spent (wasted?) an hour trying to get a pair of socks started. I couldn't even get the first sock going. At first, I spit out a few bad words in the direction of the book. But I know a lot of people have used this book. I think we may be talking user error here. Maybe some You Tube videos would help me more.

This failure was balanced by the finish of my mindless knitting project, a pair of self-striping socks in the Hermoine's Everyday Socks pattern.
I bought this yarn at 50% off and it worked out be much prettier than I expected. Into the gift box they go.
I have to throw in this photo of Kola. I love making their heads look too big for their bodies. Makes me laugh every
time. If that seems odd, remember that I work with teen-agers.
And last, but not least, we finally have flowers around here. I love spring flowers, especially the early ones like lilacs.
Wishing you a productive week!

  1. I think starting magic loop is the hardest part! It's much easier when you're further along. So happy to see signs of spring, and those are gorgeous socks.

  2. Getting it started is the hardest part of magic loop. once you get past that it will be clear sailing.

    Kola is beautiful!

  3. Your Kola looks like my old cat Zooey from years ago. I love gingers! Magic loop has eluded me too, so I switched to using 2 circulars instead of DPNs for knitting socks while traveling. It's super easy.

  4. Magic loop is easy but I find two at a time very confusing. I would recommend you try magic loop first.

  5. You might find this helpful. There’s a pattern that goes with but the videos should explain the method. https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE7A31A2EF2519D5C

  6. You have to use the video by Cat Bordhi for learning the magic loop! It's a hoot and she gets you doing it right away! Link below--
This is a very pretty pair of socks! The cat is very sweet! (despite the odd angle! lol)

  7. I am with you on the two socks at one time on the demonic loop. However, I have had success with starting a sock on dpns, knitting a few rounds of the sock and then transferring to a long circ (or two not so long circs) and then knitting a sock. Good luck!

  8. The learning curve for magic loop proved too steep for me, and I've always gone back to dpns despite multiple attempts for this old dog to learn new tricks. Wishing you luck and more lovely socks!

  9. I tried Magic Loop and didn't like it, but I do enjoy knitting socks on two circular needles. If starting socks on the circular is too difficult, begin them on DPNS and then transfer the socks to the circular needle.

  10. I can do magic loop with my eyes closed--but I cannot do two socks at a time (I get it LOGICALLY but yeah). So kudos to you for trying that. You might want to try (sometime when you're in an adventurous mood) toe up socks on two circs--Cat Bordhi's "Socks Soar" book got me started and I love it.

  11. I agree with all the advice to do one at a time. I used to do two but I hated it. Way too fiddly and everything tangles when you turn your work. I love one at a time esp for the very reason you want to learn it-no dropped needles during travel. Once you get the concept of dividing your stitches in half and making the "loop", it's really very easy.

  12. I don't like Magic Looping because for some reason, it bothers my wrists but... When I do Magic Loop, I start on dpns then transfer it over to the circular needle once I have a couple of rows done.
As for the cat photo... LOL, I work with teens too and know exactly what you mean. I'm constantly finding myself doing (and enjoying) things that are way too immature for my age. But those things sure are fun! :O)

  14. Magic Loop, hasn't worked for me. I wish it would, I'd love to knit two socks at the same time!!! Good luck!

  15. It definitely is a fiddly start, but I know you can do it. Congrats to your grad!! What a wonderful career he will have.

  17. My loop is somewhere in the wings waiting. Don't you wonder how many knitting needles are found on planes? One of my pairs of dpns is now one less from one of our trips. Love those socks and spring flowers!

  18. I dropped a dpn on a deck and it fell through the cracks and my son macguivered it out. (YAY).

maybe START the socks on dpns and do 1/2 inch then switch to ML and maybe it will make sense??
